Question: Does your alarm company test your dampers?
Answer: NO! It is a pretty big misconception in our industry to believe that the same company that inspects your fire alarm also inspects your fire and smoke dampers. You alarm company does, however, test the alarm panel to make sure that it is “speaking”‘ to the damper actuator/motor. The alarm company also checks the relay or smoke detector from the area smoke detection system, but they do not test the damper. We have created this diagram for you to help clear up any confusion:

The same rules apply when it comes to fire door inspections. While your alarm company may test the electronic/magnet mechanism on the door, they don’t inspect the door itself to ensure compliance with NFPA 80.
